WORLD : French Take Control of Comoros
PARIS — French troops landed today on the Comoros Islands, taking control of the country’s security in what the Defense Ministry called a military mission requested by the Comoros government.
Four hours later, French mercenary Bob Denard and about 25 other European soldiers of fortune who had trained and led the 600-member Comoran Presidential Guard boarded a South African military plane and left for South Africa, Agence France-Presse reported. No violence was reported during the French operation.
The French government said earlier that the mercenaries had offered to relinquish control of the country, but it was unclear whether an agreement was reached and, if so, what terms were offered.
