PHILADELPHIA — Indiana running back Anthony Thompson today was named the winner of the 53rd Maxwell Award as the most outstanding college football player of the year, as selected by Philadelphia’s Maxwell Club.
Dick Vermeil, selection chairman and former coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, said in making the announcement that Thompson “would be my first round draft pick” if he was still an active NFL coach.
Thompson beat out quarterback Andre Ware of the University of Houston, who won the Heisman Trophy.
Based on a scoring arrangement of three points for first, two for second and one for third, Thompson wound up with 1,398 points to Ware’s 1,245. West Virginia’s quarterback Major Harris received 712, Penn State running back Blair Thomas 390 and Notre Dame quarterback Tony Rice 389.
Thompson, a senior, set three new NCAA records--most yards in a single game, 377, against Wisconsin; career touchdowns, 65, and career points, 394.
