Free Kick Gives Milan Win in Tokyo Soccer Event

Alberigo Evani scored on a free kick in overtime Sunday to give European champion A.C. Milan of Italy a 1-0 victory over South American champion Nacional Medellin of Colombia in the Toyota Cup soccer tournament.

With just two minutes left in extra time, Evani’s sharp kick from just outside of the penalty area got past Nacional’s goalkeeper in the match played before a crowd of 62,000 at Tokyo’s National Stadium.

“At first, Roberto Donadoni was to kick but there was an opening to the left of the wall of the Colombian players, so I did it,” Evani said.

A.C. Milan came to Japan after winning the European Champion Clubs’ Cup for the first time in 20 years. Nacional is the winner of the Copa Libertadores, the first time for Nacional.
