Atlantic Richfield Pleads No Contest
The Atlantic Richfield Co. has pleaded no contest to charges that it released heavy black smoke from its Carson refinery and was fined $22,500.
Municipal Court Judge Carlos Marino last week also sentenced the company to one year’s probation. The company was ordered to repair the equipment that caused the smoke emission as a condition of probation. The sentence was imposed after the company pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor violations of the health and safety code for unlawfully discharging air contaminants.
Deputy Dist. Atty. William Carter said the emissions were released last May 29 from a coke heater and a tail gas incinerator at a refinery at 1801 E. Sepulveda Blvd.
