COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Louisville Wins, Gives Crum School Mark

Denny Crum became the winningest basketball coach in University of Louisville history Monday night as the ninth-ranked Cardinals beat Austin Peay, 93-59, at Louisville, Ky.

Crum, 444-149 in his 19th season, received a standing ovation from the 19,114 fans in Freedom Hall when the milestone was announced. Bernard (Peck) Hickman was 443-183 in 23 seasons with the Cardinals (1944-1967).

Louisville’s seventh straight victory also enabled the Cardinals to equal their best start since the 1982-83 Final Four squad opened with an 8-1 mark.

LaBradford Smith scored 18 points to lead Louisville.

Bowling Green 81, No. 25 Michigan State 79--Clinton Venable made a three-point shot with 14 seconds left to give the Falcons an upset victory over the No. 25 Spartans at East Lansing, Mich.

Venable’s basket came after Michigan State (7-2) rallied from a seven-point deficit to take a 79-78 lead on Parish Hickman’s rebound of a missed free throw with 1:02 remaining.

Steve Watson led Bowling Green (7-1) with 20 points. Venable scored 15 points.

Steve Smith led Michigan State with 22 points.

No. 10 Arkansas 91, Bethune-Cookman 61--The Razorbacks, leading only 30-27 at halftime, pulled away in the second half at Fayetteville, Ark.

Bethune-Cookman had 31 turnovers, and Arkansas scored the first 21 points of the second half.

Mario Credit made nine of 11 shots from the floor to lead the Razorbacks (6-1).

No. 16 Iowa 59, Drexel 50--James Moses scored 17 points and Ray Thompson had 16 to lead the unbeaten Hawkeyes to a come-from-behind victory at Iowa City.

Iowa (7-0) trailed 32-26 at halftime but started the second half with a 13-5 burst.

No. 20 Alabama 63, Baptist College 32--The Crimson Tide scored the final 29 points of the first half to cruise at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Marcus Campbell, who scored 10 points in a substitute role, was the only player in double figures for Alabama (7-1) against the overmatched Buccaneers (2-7).

New Mexico 86, Centenary 69--Rob Robbins’ 19 points and the first-half play of Marvin McBurrows led the Lobos at Albuquerque, N.M.

New Mexico, snapping a four-game losing streak, is 4-4. Centenary, which had won five of its last six, is 6-4.

Utah 65, Utah State 59--Keith Chapman scored 19 points and the Utes hit eight free throws in the final 1:24 to defeat the visiting Aggies at Salt Lake City.

Josh Grant added 15 points and Tommy Connor 11 for the Utes (6-2) of the Western Athletic Conference.

Randy Funk led Utah State (3-5) of the Big West with 16 points.

New Mexico State 74, Texas Tech 68--Randy Brown scored 14 points, six of them on second-half free throws, to lead the Aggies (7-1) at Lubbock, Tex.

Tennessee 67, South Carolina 60--Allan Houston scored 14 points to help the Volunteers overcome a 15-point first-half deficit at Columbia, S.C.

Tennessee (4-3) trailed 33-24 at the break but used a 16-4 run capped by Ronnie Reese’s dunk to take a 40-39 lead with 14:19 left. The Gamecocks are 2-2.

Clemson 104, N.C. Charlotte 79--Elden Campbell scored 26 points and Dale Davis added 22 as the Tigers (6-1) dominated inside to win at Charlotte, N.C.

Purdue 62, Wichita State 54--Tony Jones scored 13 points and Ryan Berning added 12 as the Boilermakers held the Shockers to only five points in the final five minutes at Wichita, Kan.

Arizona State 80, Seattle Pacific 76--Alex Austin scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half, including 10 in a decisive 17-5 spurt, as the Sun Devils won a nonconference game at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State (3-3) led 46-40 at halftime and 57-48 with 15:38 remaining after Austin’s steal and jump shot. Seattle Pacific (4-6) then used a 10-0 run to go up 58-57 with 10:53 left.

Austin’s three-point goal with 8:47 to play put Arizona State ahead to stay and started the decisive spurt.

Stanford 66, Santa Clara 51--Adam Keefe scored 24 points to lead the Cardinal at Santa Clara.

Stanford (6-0) led 36-21 after the first period, which saw it extend an 11-point lead to 17 points with 2:25 remaining.
