Erk Russell, who resurrected football at Georgia Southern College after 40 years, retired as head coach today, just days after winning his third NCAA Division 1-AA national championship in five years. Russell, 63, will become associate athletic director for football operations. “Erk’s Eagles” defeated Stephen F. Austin 37-34 Saturday, concluding a perfect 15-0 season.
