Electroplating Firm’s Sewer Permit Revoked
A Burbank electroplating firm’s sewage permit was revoked Wednesday for dumping heavy metals and other hazardous materials into the Los Angeles sewer system, officials said.
The order by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge revoking the permit of Magna Plating, in the 3000 block of North California Street, will force the firm to shut down, Burbank City Atty. Carolyn Barnes said. Magna Plating officials declined to comment on the ruling.
The company was cited by the city for violations found between May and November of this year, Barnes said. In the electroplating process, objects such as silverware, jewelry and cans are coated with a layer of metal.
Magna Plating’s discharges into the sewer system exceeded limits for the heavy metals cadmium and chromium, as well as for such hazardous chemicals as sulfate and chloride, Barnes said.
Sewer waste water is pumped to the city of Los Angeles’ Hyperion Treatment Plant, which discharges it into the Santa Monica Bay after treatment.
