COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Valley Tops Ventura for Riverside Title, 84-65

Christine Rumfola buried five consecutive jump shots after the intermission Wednesday to break a tie and lift the Valley College women’s basketball team over Ventura, 84-65, in the championship game of the Riverside tournament.

Early in the second half with the score tied, 51-51, Rumfola, who finished with 21 points and made 10 of 17 shots from the field, erupted to give the Monarchs (11-2) a 10-point edge that they never relinquished.

Rumfola was named to the all-tournament team.

It was Valley’s seventh consecutive victory and the third consecutive time it has won the Riverside tournament.

Valley forward Laura Kirkpatrick, an All-Southern Section player while at Buckley High, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Kirkpatrick scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the final.

Sandrine Rocher contributed 16 points for the Monarchs and Ericka Miller added 13 points and seven assists.

In another women’s game:

Pierce 77, San Diego City 56--Melanie Sapon scored a game-high 28 points in a nonleague game at San Diego to lead the Brahmas (7-8) to their third consecutive victory.

MEN

Cal State Stanislaus 95, Cal Lutheran 74--Brian Roscoe came off the bench to score all but two of his 22 points in the second half to lead Cal State Stanislaus and help send visiting Cal Lutheran to its 11th consecutive defeat without a victory in a nonconference game.

With Cal Lutheran trailing in the second half, 49-42, Roscoe scored 16 of the Warriors’ next 21 points over the next six minutes.

Stanislaus led, 70-51, with 9:44 remaining.

Roscoe’s outburst and teammate Shawn Graham’s 23 points negated a 29-point, six-rebound performance by Cal Lutheran guard Jeff deLaveaga.

Mike Demeter added 18 points for the Kingsmen, who have lost 11 in a row.

Cerritos 103, Canyons 82--The Cougars trailed by five at halftime but were unable to keep pace in a nonconference game at Cerritos.

Larry Allbritton led Canyons (6-8) with a game-high 23 points and Aaron Clark scored 21.

Simpson (Iowa) 81, Occidental 77--The Tigers led by five at the intermission but were outscored, 46-37, in the the second half of a nonconference game at Occidental.

Ethan Caldwell led Occidental (3-6) with 20 points and center Chris Anderson added 18.
