The seventh annual Academy of Country Music Celebrity Golf Tournament was held Oct. 16 at the De Bell Golf Course in Burbank hosted by Moe Bandy. During ceremonies that evening, at the Castaway Restaurant, Executive Director Bill Boyd and board chairman Gene Weed of ACM handed over a check for $35,000 to Floyd Glinert, board chairman of the T.J. Martell Foundation. Proceeds will be split between the foundation and the Neil Bogart Memorial Laboratory for leukemia, cancer and AIDS research. Corporate sponsors for the tournament were George Dickel “Tennessee Sippin’ Whiskey” and Trans World Airlines.

* The “Gobbler” Invitational Golf Tournament held Nov. 20 at the Mountaingate Country Club, with 110 golfers participating, included Bob Newhart, Michael Keaton, Marcia Brandwynne, Tom Poston, Andrew Stevens and others. Home Savings of America was corporate sponsor. The tournament will benefit the Alzheimer’s Assn. with net proceeds of $22,000 to be used for research for the prevention, cure and treatment of the disease and related disorders and to provide support and assistance to patients and their families.

* The annual American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California awards dinner, celebrating the 198th anniversary of the Bill of Rights, was held Dec. 2 at the Registry Hotel at Universal City. The event raised more than $150,000 to benefit ACLU’s educational and legislative programs. The event was co-chaired by Harry Belafonte, Barbra Streisand, Goldie Hawn, Nancy and Bob Daly, Sydney and Claire Pollack, Norman and Lyn Lear and others.

* The John Wayne Cancer Clinic hosted its 10th annual benefactor’s dinner Dec. 3 at Jimmy’s Restaurant, Beverly Hills. The event, attended by more than 300 guests, honored those who have contributed $1,000 or more during the year. To date, benefactors have given more than $250,000 to the clinic to be used for research. Gretchen Wayne, Toni Wayne LaCava and clinic executive director Joyce Green were co-chairs.

* The AIDS Project Los Angeles premiere screening of “Mother, Mother” was held Dec. 6 at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood followed by a reception. Major funding was provided by John Hancock Financial Services. The event raised $60,000 for the Los Angeles AIDS Hospice.
