Holiday Traffic Accidents Take 6 Lives in County

A man with three empty beer bottles in the back seat of his car died early Monday when his vehicle ran into a tree on Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles police said.

Three passengers were injured in the dawn crash at the corner of Pico and Westgate Avenue in West Los Angeles, one of six fatal accidents reported in Los Angeles County during the holiday weekend.

The name of the victim was not released pending notification of his family, Officer Mark Pooler said.

In other traffic deaths, a 4-year-old girl was hit by a car and killed Sunday afternoon when she crossed a street in Long Beach. Two playmates who were also in the street were not hurt. The driver was not arrested, police said. The victim’s name was not released.

Also Sunday, William Wilcox, 26, of El Monte, was killed when his pickup truck overturned and rolled down an embankment on the transition road between the San Gabriel River Freeway and the San Bernardino Freeway.

Gema Baker, 17, of Reseda, was killed Saturday when her car collided with another vehicle as she drove to work at the Topanga Plaza shopping mall.

Olga Avila, 25, was killed Saturday after falling off a motorcycle on the Long Beach Freeway. Clinton A. Reyes, 42, of Los Angeles, died when his car crashed into the center divider on the Harbor Freeway.
