Much at Stake for Curry in Vegas Middleweight Bout

When former world welterweight champion Donald Curry takes on Brett Lally in a junior middleweight bout tonight in Las Vegas, there will be more at stake for Curry than just a win or a loss.
“If he still has it, I have lots of spots for him to fight,” said Bob Arum, who promoted Curry’s rise to the top and is promoting tonight’s fight. “He came close to hitting the super-big-time paydays. He could still do it.”
Curry, the former world champ at 147 and 154 pounds, will fight Lally in a non-title bout in the main event of an Arum promotion for ESPN at Bally’s Hotel Casino.
The fight marks Curry’s first trip to the ring since losing his WBC super middleweight crown Feb. 11 on a decision to Frenchman Rene Jacquet.
Curry, of Ft. Worth, Tex., goes into the fight with a 31-3 record, including 23 knockouts. He is 6-3 in his last nine fights, starting with Lloyd Honeygan’s sixth-round knockout of him on Sept. 26, 1986 to take away his world welterweight belt.
Lally, of Detroit, is 24-4 with 13 knockouts. He has won nine consecutive fights.
