And That’s the Way It Is: San Francisco television station KPIX is moving CBS anchorman Dan Rather ahead to 5:30 p.m.from 7 p.m. hoping to build ratings for its local 6 p.m. news report. KPIX hopes the move, set to debut Jan. 8, will soften the competition locally where Rather has suffered against “Wheel of Fortune” on KRON and rival ABC anchor Peter Jennings on KGO. In the earlier slot, Rather will face off against NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw on KRON and local news on KGO . . . ABC’s Peter Jennings, in an article written for the Dec. 30 issue of TV Guide, says that those who didn’t watch television in 1989 were “deprived.” Jennings wrote that television was uniquely positioned to capture the major events of 1989. “We all know there’s bad television, but its overwhelming value is that we all can be eyewitness to history,” Jennings writes. Citing coverage of 1989’s historic events in Eastern Europe, Jennings wrote: “As the world watched on television, Czechoslovaks and Poles and Hungarians and Germans were changing the world with breathtaking speed.”
