NHL ROUNDUP : Sabres’ Late Burst Beats Red Wings

Scoring three goals in two minutes late in the third period, the Sabres beat Detroit, 6-3, Tuesday night at Buffalo to maintain the best record in the NHL.

The Red Wings rallied to tie, 3-3, with just 5:40 left in regulation.

Two minutes later Scott Arniel scored his ninth goal, then Rick Vaive added his 17th to clinch the victory for the Sabres. Benoit Hogue added an empty net goal.

The Sabres, with a 23-9-6 record and 52 points, lead Montreal in the Adams Division by seven points.

Washington 6, Pittsburgh 3--The Capitals spotted the Penguins three goals in the opening 12 minutes, then stormed back.

After rallying to tie, Bob Joyce scored just 43 seconds into the third period and Dino Ciccarelli scored his 17th at 14:17 to clinch it.

Boston 6, Toronto 4--Craig Janney scored twice and assisted on Cam Neely’s two goals at Boston.

The Maple Leafs led twice, but they went down to defeat when Janney scored his second goal late in the third period.

Hartford 3, Quebec 3--The Nordiques were just six minutes away from ending their 13-game winless streak.

Then, a fluke extended the streak to 14 games (0-11-3). Kevin Dineen’s shot deflected off the skate of Quebec defenseman Curtis Leschyshyn and into the net for the tie.

New Jersey 4, N.Y. Rangers 4--Kirk Muller’s second goal of the game came with just 25 seconds left at New York to give the Devils a tie.

The Rangers are winless in their last eight games (0-5-3).

St. Louis 8, Chicago 3--Brett Hull scored twice to regain the goal-scoring lead with 31 and lead the Blues to the one-sided win at St. Louis.

Winnipeg 5, Minnesota 3--Thomas Steen had a goal and two assists in a four-goal third-period rally at Winnipeg.
