Long-Sought Murder Suspect Found in Prison

A murder suspect who eluded police for more than four years has been found at a state prison in San Diego and will be returned to Los Angeles County to face charges for the drive-by shooting of an Inglewood man, authorities said.

Gordon Bullock, 30, is accused of killing Alvin Humphrey, 20, outside an Inglewood hamburger stand in 1985.

Bullock had been spotted several times over the last four years and once was stopped by sheriff’s deputies in Lennox, but he was released after he gave a false name, said Inglewood homicide Detective Larry Marino.

“He was a very elusive individual,” Marino said.

Then, last week, officials at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego called to say that Bullock was serving a four-year sentence for coercing a witness in an unrelated case.

Humphrey had attended a homecoming football game at Morningside High School in Inglewood on Oct. 5, 1985, and stopped with friends afterward at the Brolly Hut, 11205 S. Crenshaw Blvd.

He was eating at an outside table when Bullock and some friends drove by the restaurant and opened fire, Marino said.

Bullock’s friends had visited the restaurant about an hour earlier and argued with customers inside. They returned and fired randomly at the restaurant, striking Humphrey, who had not been involved in the argument, Marino said.

The driver of the car later told police that Bullock fired the shot that struck Humphrey in the head, Marino said.
