A 19-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service will take over duties as Garden Grove’s postmaster Thursday, but the city will be getting more than just a new chief postal executive.

“I’m looking forward to being active in the community through the local Rotary club and chamber of commerce,” said Benjamin M. Torres, 40, who has served as Placentia’s postmaster since February, 1986.

Torres described himself as a “people-oriented” executive. “If you talk with people up front and let them know what you expect from them, you can be more effective,” said Torres, whose responsibilities include the main Garden Grove post office and the West Garden Grove station, where a total of 258 people work.

Torres was born in Whittier, attended high school in Albuquerque, N. M., and college in Los Angeles. He graduated from Cal State L.A. with a business degree in 1980.

He has two children and one grandchild. He is a member of the Placentia Rotary, chamber of commerce and the League of Latin-American Citizens. He also enjoys baseball and golf.
