Cal State Trustee Credentials, Chancellor’s Salary Increase

The recent articles involving Chancellor Reynolds offended me both as a taxpayer and as a professor. On Dec. 20, The Times reported that the chairwoman of the State University system’s board of trustees had claimed an Associate of Arts degree she did not possess. Even more disturbing, Reynolds dismissed the affair, remarking that trustees “cannot be held to the same standards as university employees.” Apparently not--a professor would be fired for the same offense. Now faculty who are trying to impart a sense of ethics to their skeptical students are cut off at the knees by a chancellor who upholds dual standards of ethics.
Two days later it was announced that Reynolds’ salary is being boosted 43%, to nearly four times what a top-step full professor earns. The taxpayers will not be getting their money’s worth.
Reynolds should either recant or resign.
