From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A northern San Diego County man says he waited more than a week before turning in a California Lottery ticket worth $10.2 million because he first wanted to get financial advice. Russell R. Thyret, 69, of Encinitas said Friday that he also hoped that publicity would die down before he submitted the ticket to lottery officials Thursday. “I wanted to contact my attorney and bookkeeper, and with the holidays and all,” Thyret said. “I want to keep publicity to a minimum.” The winning ticket, originally estimated to be worth $9.9 million, was among five quick-pick tickets Thyret bought at an Encinitas supermarket Dec. 20 for that day’s Lotto game. His winnings rose to $10.2 million with annuities when lottery officials found they had miscalculated.
