COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Chapman Can’t Catch Chico State After Slow Start
Chico State took a 23-point in the first 10 minutes and went on to defeat Chapman, 100-80, Friday in the semifinals of the Chico State tournament.
The Panthers (7-3) had defeated Chico, 80-79, in the season opener at Chapman, but they couldn’t handle the Chico press and turned the ball over 20 times in the first half and had 34 in all.
Frantz Reyes had 37 points and 11 rebounds and Roger Middleton had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Chapman.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Northern Illinois 94, Cal State Fullerton 80--Visiting Northern Illinois (7-2) was led by Lisa Foss, who had 26 points, and Carol Owens, who had 24. Cal State Fullerton (4-4) was led by Jill Matyuch, who had 21 points. Fullerton had 28 turnovers and never got closer than nine points.
Furman 81, UC Irvine 77--Rushia Brown had 20 points before fouling out for Furman (8-4) at Irvine. Kathy Lizarraga led Irvine (1-8) with 22 points.
