A funeral service is scheduled today at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Chapel in Altadena for Gweneth Margaret Howarth Feynman, a free-lance landscape designer, singer and widow of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman.

Mrs. Feynman died Sunday of cancer at UCLA Medical Center, said Frances Lewine, a cousin. She was 55 and traveling in Egypt when her final illness began. Earlier she had been in the Antarctica, the last of the world’s continents she had not visited.

Mrs. Feynman began a free-lance landscaping business as an outgrowth of home gardening, Lewine said.

A native of England, Mrs. Feynman came to the United States in 1959 and had lived in Altadena for the last two decades.

She was one of the founders of the Noyes Library at Alfred E. Noyes Elementary School in Altadena and of the Arroyo Singers, a non-professional women’s choral group that was founded by the wives of several Caltech faculty members.

Mrs. Feynman was the Nobel laureate’s third wife. Her husband taught at Caltech and died in February, 1988. She is survived by a son, a daughter and a sister.

In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to the John Wayne Cancer Clinic at UCLA Medical Center, P.O. Box 24209, Los Angeles 90024
