Ohio State Stuns No. 9 Indiana
Indiana Coach Bob Knight deplored his team’s play throughout its game against Ohio State Thursday night, but still hoped a last-second shot might make the Hoosiers embarrassed winners.
But the Buckeyes (6-4) were able to hold off a last-minute rally and survived a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds bin handing the ninth-ranked Hoosiers their first defeat, 69-67, in the Big Ten opener for both schools at Columbus, Ohio.
After the Hoosiers worked the ball around the perimeter for most of the final 38 seconds, Todd Leary was left with an off-balance three-point attempt with two seconds left. His shot caromed off the rim and bounced out of bounds as the game ended.
“Had we won it, we wouldn’t have deserved to win it,” Knight said. “We never could get on top. That’s one reason we tried to win it at the end.”
Indiana had won its first 10 games with seven freshmen leading the way. But Ohio State freshmen Jim Jackson and Alex Davis turned the tide. Jackson scored 19 points and Davis 15.
