Transit Authority President David Gunn, who spent the last six years rebuilding the nation’s largest transportation system, said Friday he will resign Feb. 28 to get “some new blood at the top.”

“I have no plans at the moment, other than to split some wood and do some hiking,” said Gunn, 52. His resignation came five days after the inauguration of Mayor David Dinkins and an increase in subway and bus fares from $1 to $1.15.
