A newborn girl was found in a cardboard box on the doorsteps of a drug treatment center Sunday night, a San Diego police spokesman said.

An employee of Crash Inc., 5685 Plumas St. in Paradise Hills, heard a knock on the door about 9:30 p.m., police spokesman Bill Robinson said. The employee found the girl wrapped in towels with the umbilical cord still attached.

Robinson said a note attached to the box said: “To whom it may concern, you may think it’s cruel to leave a baby at your door, but the baby needs love and care, which I am not in a position to give. Please call the hospital to see if the baby is fine, healthy, and getting perfect care.”

The baby is in good condition at UC San Diego Medical Center, and is in the custody of the county’s Child Protective Services. Police are searching for the parents.
