COUNTYWIDE : Dr. King’s Birthday to Be Marked at UCI

A three-day series of lectures and performances honoring the approaching birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will begin today at UC Irvine.

The theme of this year’s symposium, the sixth annual program in memory of the slain civil rights leader, is “Let Freedom Ring: Transforming Intellectual Commitment Into Social Action.”

Today’s events, conducted under the theme of “The Price of Freedom,” begin at noon at Gateway Plaza, where the Carter C. Woodson Living History Museum will offer a program of historical presentations. The symposium continues at 1 p.m. with a panel discussion on civil rights and career aspirations at the university’s Cross-Cultural Center.

A second panel discussion, “From Miseducation to Education,” will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Cross-Cultural Center.

At 7:30 p.m. today, dramatist Felix Justice will present “Prophecy in America,” a one-man show, at the Little Theater, 161 Humanities Hall. The symposium’s keynote address will be delivered at the University Methodist Church in Irvine at 7:30 p.m. Thursdayby Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, an educator and author. Tickets for both events are $5, $3 and $2 at the door.

The events will conclude Friday with a march to the UC Irvine campus from William R. Mason Regional Park in Irvine at 10 a.m., followed by a noon rally at Gateway Plaza.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday.
