A British member of Parliament was cleared Tuesday of charges he stole underwear from his former mistress, but a court said he must pay compensation for smashing up her apartment after their relationship broke up.

Opposition Labor Party legislator Ron Brown, dubbed by one of his own leaders as the “clown prince” of British politics, was fined $1,650 by a court in Lewes and ordered to pay $1,036 damages.

A jury found he caused criminal damage at the home of his former research assistant and lover, Nonna Longden, last April during an argument after their four-year affair ended.
