Long Beach : King Unity Parade Scheduled Saturday Morning
The second annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Unity Parade in downtown Long Beach will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at 10th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, where it will head north to Rhea Street, then east to Martin Luther King Jr. Park at 1950 Lemon Ave.
After the parade there will be a program at the park beginning approximately at 12:30 p.m. It will include entertainment, speeches and food.
The parade grand marshals are two long-time community activists, Ernest McBride and Zelma Lipscomb. A reviewing stand with 500 seats will be located at California Recreation Center, 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.
“The purpose of the parade is to celebrate Dr. King and his philosophy of nonviolence as a weapon to bring about social change in our society,” said Councilman Clarence Smith, who represents an inner-city district on the Long Beach City Council. The parade also is meant “to unite people of various cultures for the benefit of our city and its people,” Smith said.
