Action Paves Way for New Police Substation
The Los Angeles City Council has approved an agreement that paves the way for a police substation to open in Chinatown later this year.
The city Police Department will operate the substation at a facility owned by the Chinatown Public Safety Assn., a nonprofit group organized by local Chinese citizens eight years ago to bring a permanent substation to the community.
The safety group is building a $980,000 two-story facility at 823 N. Hill St., with $681,000 in grants and loans from the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency, and public donations. A Chinatown police service center has operated out of a donated office since 1983.
The association will lease 1,500 square feet of office space and five parking spaces to the Police Department for $1 a year for 10 years.
