WEST COAST CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : USF Squeaks Past Portland, 77-75

Joel DeBortoli sank a 17-foot jumper with four seconds left to lift the University of San Francisco to a 77-75 victory over the University of Portland Thursday night in a West Coast Conference basketball opener at Portland.

USF (5-10) saw a 14-point second-half lead evaporate as the Pilots (3-11) made a 25-9 run. Portland’s David Roth hit from three-point range with 2:32 remaining to give the Pilots a 73-71 lead.

St. Mary’s 61, Gonzaga 53--Mike Vontoure scored 19 points, hitting three of four shots from three-point range, to lead the Gaels over the Bulldogs at Spokane.

St. Mary’s, after a 1-9 start, won its fourth game in a row to improve to 5-9 overall and 2-0 in the WCC. Gonzaga, which is 1-9 against NCAA Division I opponents, fell to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
