One of the best days of the yearly sports calendar arrives Sunday when the National Football League’s conference titles are decided.

Unlike the traditionally dull, one-sided Super Bowl, the conference championship games have provided excitement, drama and memorable moments during the last decade.

The Rams hope to add to that tradition with a win over the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football Conference championship game, 2 p.m., Channels 2 and 8. Although the 49ers have dominated the NFL in the last two seasons, the Rams have dominated the 49ers. San Francisco is 25-5 in its last 30 games, with the Rams administering three of those losses.

The Denver Broncos and Cleveland Browns, who have contributed “The Drive” and “The Fumble” to conference championship game lore, meet in the American Football Conference championship game at 10:30 a.m. on Channels 4, 36 and 39.

Two of the Southland’s professional teams that are playing out of character have television dates today. The Clippers, already assured of their winningest road trip since moving to Los Angeles in 1984, face Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls at 5:30 p.m. on Channel 5. The Kings, who were considered among the favorites to win the Stanley Cup, but instead have seen themselves reduced to trying to avoid fourth place in the Smythe Division, try to end their five-game winless streak against Hartford at 7:30 p.m. on Prime Ticket.

In college basketball, No. 19 UCLA has another chance to prove it can beat a Top 25 team and has returned among the sport’s elite, when it plays host to No. 18 Arizona at 3 p.m. today on Channel 2.
