A defendant who mooned a jury and judge hearing his robbery case was convicted Friday of all charges.

Lee Roy Castellano, 39, of San Diego, was not present to hear the guilty verdicts because San Diego Superior Court Judge Norbert Ehrenfreund ruled that he was too disruptive in court to attend.

Castellano heard the proceedings in a room down the hall with the sound piped in to him.

The day before the mooning, Castellano threw a pitcher of water at the prosecutor, Josephine Kiernan, which missed, but splashed her and some jurors.

Castellano had returned to court Tuesday in chains, but still managed to pull his pants and underwear down in court just before a recess. Bailiffs then removed him as he shouted explicit remarks about his anatomy.

The same jury that convicted Castellano of two street robberies and firing a gun into his mother’s house will return Tuesday to determine whether he has valid prior felony convictions. Kiernan will present documents to the jury to show Castellano has been convicted five times of robbery, attempted robbery, auto theft and receiving stolen property.

If they find the convictions valid, it could add years to his state prison sentence. Most defendants waive a trial to determine if prior convictions are valid.
