The Closing of SOS

Share

The recent vote of the Costa Mesa City Council to terminate the Share Our Selves lease at the Rea Community Center may have a totally unexpected reaction. In a conversation with some Latinos, I was told that they were resentful (about SOS closing) because so many of the needy were Latinos.

Since a large part of the tax funds received by the Costa Mesa treasury is derived from sales taxes from various shopping centers, particularly South Coast Plaza, they are rapidly passing the word to fellow Latinos to boycott Costa Mesa sales outlets.

They also claim that they have personally surveyed the neighborhood and have never seen any of the SOS recipients on the opposite side of the street and that the residents’ complaints are based on social snobbery.
