Te Kanawa Makes Triumphant Return: Soprano Kiri Te Kanawa returned in triumph to her native New Zealand Sunday, drawing the country’s biggest ever concert audience. Organizers put the number of fans at an open-air concert in Auckland’s Domain Park at 140,000, more than double the crowds at concerts by rock music greats U2, Mick Jagger and David Bowie. Fans started grabbing the best positions at 3:30 a.m. and the park filled up during the day. When Te Kanawa finally took to the stage 18 hours later, she said: “Thank you for sparing the time to come.” The concert was billed as “Kiwi’s Homecoming” since Te Kanawa, who now lives near London, has not performed in New Zealand since 1984.
