Four male juveniles, ranging in age from 11 to 14, were arrested Sunday on suspicion of stealing a van after leading police on a high-speed chase through Northridge and Chatsworth, authorities said.

A Los Angeles police officer on routine patrol spotted the 1990 Volkswagen van without a license plate at the corner of Plummer Street and Tampa Avenue near Northridge Fashion Center about 2:40 p.m., said Sgt. David Clinton.

The officer attempted to stop the van, but it sped away, Clinton said.

The officer chased the van and was joined by another patrol unit and a helicopter during the 30-minute pursuit down several rain-slicked streets, he said. It ended when the van came to a stop in an alley behind an apartment complex at Parthenia Street and Independence Avenue, Clinton said.

The four youths, whose identities were withheld because of their age, were arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto and were expected to be released to their parents, Clinton said.
