Jerry Gray Reportedly Agrees to One-Year Contract With Rams

Ram cornerback Jerry Gray has agreed to terms on a one-year contract that will reportedly pay him about $500,000 in 1990, a source close to the deal said Monday.

Gray, who will make his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl appearance this season, just concluded the last year of a contract that paid him $250,000 in 1989. Gray would have become a restricted free agent Feb. 1, meaning he could have accepted offer sheets from other NFL teams and signed for the price of compensation to the Rams--two first-round draft choices.

Gray, 27, led the Rams in interceptions in 1989 with six and also had 79 tackles. He led the Rams with 23 passes defended against during the regular season.

Gray, the team’s first-round draft choice of 1985, was a free safety at the University of Texas who was converted to cornerback when he joined the Rams.

And although he has been named to the Pro Bowl four times in five seasons as a cornerback, Coach John Robinson plans to move Gray back to free safety next season.
