G. William Miller, the former Federal Reserve chairman named Tuesday to head the retailing units of Campeau Corp., will draw on a broad background in finance to bring the ailing department store company back to health.

Miller, 64, was named chairman and chief executive of Federated Stores Inc., the newly named holding company for Campeau’s U.S. retail operations.

Miller has been a member of the Campeau board, as well as those of Allied and Federated. Miller is no stranger to the corporate world. As Treasury secretary from 1979 to 1981, he was the Administration’s point man for the government bailout of Chrysler Corp.
