Public’s Opinion of Legislature

“Legislators on the Take, Most in Survey Believe” (Jan. 3), and “Legislators Angered by Poll” (Jan. 4) were headlines that shouldn’t have startled the Legislature or its electorate.
Generalizations are tools we use with relish. They help us feel comfortable in cynicism or praise. The breadth and depth of bribery are difficult to measure. Certainly, tighter laws to squelch this practice are long overdue.
I was alarmed to read the Jan. 1 headline “California Laws ‘90” under which a line stated that 1,455 laws were passed in 1989 through the legislative-executive process. California has been in the business of self-governance since 1850. Is there room in our lives to have government pass 1,455 more laws after the 139th year of existence?
