The board of the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency voted unanimously this morning to allow the Museum of Contemporary Art to go ahead with a plan to install a 218-foot-long mural on a wall of the Temporary Contemporary in Little Tokyo.

The mural, designed by artist Barbara Kruger, has a red, white and blue flag-like design emblazoned with a series of politically provocative questions. Plans to create the mural were stalled last year when some Little Tokyo residents and organizations objected to the original design, which included the wording of the Pledge of Allegiance. They said the huge mural would be a difficult reminder of confinement of Japanese-Americans in relocation campus during World War II. Kruger later changed the design to eliminate the pledge.

The museum still must obtain a permit from the city Department of Building and Safety before painting can begin. Museum officials said they are not certain when the work will be completed.
