THE SIDELINES : Howell Signs for $4.7 Million
The Philadelphia Phillies announced today the signing of pitcher Ken Howell to a three-year, $4.7-million contract.
Howell, 29, will receive a $500,000 signing bonus and $550,000 salary for 1990, $1.7 million for 1991, and $2 million for 1992. He would get another $2.1 million if the Phillies pick up an option for 1993.
Howell, who would have been eligible for free agency at the end of the 1990 season, had a career high 12-12 record with a 3.44 ERA for the Phillies last season.
Howell’s contract also calls for Cy Young Award and All-Star game bonuses.
