Culver City : Crime Rates Fall, Police Say

Share

Crime in Culver City last year was down 1% from 1988 and down 34% since 1980, the Police Department reported.

Violent crime, including murder, rape, robbery, assault and battery, dropped 8% between 1988 and 1989, down from 424 reported incidents in 1988 to 390 in 1989, according to Lt. Ed Baughan of the department’s Crime Prevention Unit.

Police Chief Ted Cooke said the decreases were linked to high police visibility. About 70% of the department’s 104 officers are assigned to the streets, Baughan said.

Auto thefts, however, increased to 489 in 1989 from 461 in 1988, and car break-ins rose from 665 in 1988 to 776 in 1989.
