Picus Asks 200 Groups to Seek More Supervisors

Share

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joy Picus sent a letter to 200 community groups urging them to join her in calling on the County Board of Supervisors to expand the board from five to nine members.

Picus said she hoped that expansion would provide seats for minorities and women. Picus, who has expressed interest in running for supervisor, said that if the board refuses to expand, she may lead a drive to gather the required 205,826 signatures to put the issue before voters.

The U.S. Justice Department and two civil rights groups have accused the supervisors in a lawsuit of splitting up many of the county’s 3 million Latinos between three districts, thereby weakening their political influence in violation of the federal Voting Rights Act.
