The helicopters will be out over a large swath of North Orange County on Thursday, spraying malathion in an attempt to eradicate the Mediterranean fruit fly. The densely populated region includes almost all of Garden Grove, about half of Westminster, and parts of Cypress, Stanton, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, Orange and Anaheim.

The area to be sprayed is the second target in Orange County since the latest infestation. The Brea area has been sprayed three times in the last two months. State agriculture officials announced last week that the pesticide will be sprayed over a 36-square-mile area of Orange County as many as a dozen times by this summer.

The latest Southern California infestation of the Medfly--which attacks about 260 varieties of produce--began in August when one was captured near Dodger Stadium. The insects have since been spotted dozens of times around the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, Los Angeles and northern Orange County.
