‘Born on the 4th’ Captures Two Golden Globes

“Born on the Fourth of July,” the powerful Vietnam drama, won Golden Globe awards for best director and screenplay in an emotional presentation ceremony Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton.

Ron Kovic, the disabled veteran whose story was the basis for the movie, received a standing ovation in accepting the screenwriter award with co-writer and director Oliver Stone at the 47th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

The other early multiple winner was “Driving Miss Daisy,” which captured trophies for best actor and actress in a musical or comedy motion picture, for Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy.

In the television competition, the CBS series “Murphy Brown” won as best musical or comedy television series and “Lonesome Dove” won for best mini-series or television movie. Robert Duvall also won for best actor in a mini-series or TV movie for “Lonesome Dove.”

Other early winners were Ted Danson for his role on “Cheers,” and Jamie Lee Curtis for her role in “Anything But Love.”

Nominated for best dramatic picture were “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Crimes and Misdemeanors,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Do the Right Thing” and “Glory.”

The selections for best musical or comedy were “Driving Miss Daisy,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Shirley Valentine,” “The War of the Roses” and “When Harry Met Sally.”

NBC’s “L.A. Law” was the most-nominated television show, in eight categories.
