If every pet shop ceased to sell animals from puppy (and kitten) mills tomorrow, the latter would cease to be in business--leaving reputable breeders and animal shelters as the only legitimate, humane and healthy sources for pets, which is how it should really be.

In fact, with all the unwanted companion animals needing homes right this minute, even breeding pets (albeit purebred) seems obscene.
