SOUTHLAND : Black Muslim Slain by Deputies
A routine traffic stop early today erupted into a melee between sheriff’s deputies and Black Muslims, leaving one person dead and another wounded in the second clash between authorities and the sect in three weeks, officials said.
One suspect was killed and another wounded during the 12:40 a.m. incident in the Athens District of South-Central Los Angeles, authorities said. No deputies were injured.
A spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department said two deputies pulled over a car for a routine traffic violation and were questioning the driver when they were confronted by several men who rushed at them from a nearby apartment building. The shooting followed.
