ANAHEIM : 2 Condos to Be Built for Poor Families

Two new condominiums for very low-income families will be built by the Orange County branch of Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit home-building corporation.

The two three-bedroom, two-bath townhouses will be built on the northwest corner of La Palma Avenue and Patt Street with volunteer labor and donated supplies. Each family will be expected to contribute 1,000 hours of labor toward the construction.

“We don’t have too much trouble with the construction costs, so the land is really the issue,” said Annelle Karlstad, a Habitat for Humanity board member.

The group recently reached agreements with Anaheim for city-owned land. Karlstad said that each of the 1,100-square-foot condos will sell for about $50,000, and the families selected will be expected to raise a 1% down payment of $500. Monthly house payments on the interest-free loan would be about $200, she said.

The city housing authority has assigned other plots of land in the area for people with low incomes, and Habitat for Humanity hopes to work with the city to develop those lots for low-income homeowners.
