Jean Charest resigned as Canada’s federal sports minister in the wake of complaints that he had tried to speak with a Quebec judge who was about to rule on a case involving the Canadian Track and Field Assn.

Liberal opposition critics had demanded Charest’s resignation after Quebec Superior Court Judge Yvan Macerola said Tuesday Charest had called him to discuss a case on which he was to rule.
