Muckenthaler Center Offers Winter Classes and Lectures on Art History, Creativity

The Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton is offering winter classes and lectures on art history, artistic creativity, the history of documentary photography, neon design, relief printing, portrait sketches and porcelain dolls.

A four-part, art history lecture series begins Friday. Pat Craig, a lecturer at Cal State Fullerton, will speak on “Impressionism” Friday, on “The Noble Savages: Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin” on Feb. 9; on “Landscapes Throughout the Ages: An Artist’s Perspective” on Feb. 16, and on “Baroque Art” on Feb. 23. Each lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m.; admission to each will be $8.

“Developing Content,” a five-week workshop on stimulation of artistic creativity, led by artists Karen Innis Reid and Gail Classen, starts Feb. 3 at 9 a.m. and will meet for three-hour sessions of critiques and discussions. The fee is $53 ($50 for members).

Deborah Klochko, curator of education for the California Museum of Photography, will lecture on “Image Makers: Traditions in Documentary Photography” on Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. Photographers whose work will be discussed include Margaret Bourke-White, Lewis Hine, Roger Fenton and August Sanders. Admission is $5 ($3 for members).

A five-week series of classes in neon design begin Jan. 30 from 7 to 10 p.m. Limited to 30 students, the class will cover pattern-making, wiring, assembly and transformer-loading. The last class will feature a field trip to a North Hollywood studio for a demonstration of glass-bending. The fee is $125 ($122 for center members).

A seven-week workshop on relief printing, taught by artist Glenn Brooks of Cypress, starts Wednesday at 7 p.m. The two-hour classes include instruction in linocut, woodcut and other print techniques, and should familiarize students with tools, terminology and materials. The fee is $78 ($75 for members).

A six-week class in quick portrait sketching begins Feb. 3 at 1:30. Artist Lnda Muniz will teach a variety of techniques using charcoal, pencil and pastels during the 90-minute classes. The fee is $42 ($39 for members).

Julie Brooks teaches porcelain doll construction in a five-week class beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday. The fee is $103 ($100 for members).
