A Beverly Hills police officer was killed on his way to work Friday when his motorcycle struck a curb near his home in Moorpark, throwing him into a light pole, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Allen Karlin, 38, was pronounced dead on arrival at Simi Valley Adventist Hospital following the 4:45 a.m. accident at Hearon Drive and Collins Drive, Lt. Richard Diaz said. It was not known why the motorcycle hit the curb, Diaz said. The officer was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, he said.

Karlin was a 14-year veteran of the department, where he most recently worked as a patrol training officer, Beverly Hills Police Lt. Robert Curtis said. He was an officer for the Inglewood Police Department for three years before joining the Beverly Hills department, Curtis said.
