The chairman and chief executive of Capital Cities-ABC Inc., Thomas S. Murphy, plans to recommend that President Daniel B. Burke succeed him as chief executive on June 1, the company said today.

Murphy and Burke have worked together at the giant media company for many years, and it had been expected widely that Murphy would turn the chief executive’s job over to Burke at some point.

Capital Cities-ABC said Murphy intends to stay on as chairman.

The company owns the ABC television network, eight television stations, six radio networks and 21 radio stations and has publishing interests.
