Sanchez Vicario Advances Easily in Tokyo
Second-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain trounced Jo-Anne Faull of Australia, 6-1, 6-0, Wednesday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament.
Also advancing was Switzerland’s Manuela Maleeva, who routed American Terry Phelps, 6-2, 6-1.
Top-seeded Steffi Graf plays her first match today against Nicole Jagerman of the Netherlands in the second round, and No. 4-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez faces Japan’s Nana Miyagi.
Sanchez Vicario, ranked fifth in the world, and Faull, ranked 69th, traded service breaks in the first two games, but the Australian was unable to win another game.
“I shot passing shots and backhands very well,” Sanchez Vicario said. “I am in top shape (because) I skipped the Australian Open and trained hard.
The third-seeded Maleeva, firing six aces, overwhelmed an erratic Phelps, who is ranked 55th in the world.
