WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Shannon Abrams scored 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds off the bench as host Point Loma Nazarene defeated Southern California College in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. The Crusaders improved to 12-10, 2-4.

TENNIS

No. 1 J.R. Edwards defeated Francois Monnar, 6-3, 6-2, and then teamed with Tim Bubnack to defeat Monnar and Tim Ditzler, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the University of San Diego’s 9-0 victory over UC San Diego in a nonconference match. USD improved to 2-2. The Tritons are 0-3.

San Diego State dropped its first match in four this season, a nonconference contest to No. 3 UCLA, 8-1. Jeff Belloli and Matt Rivera defeated Jason Sher and Mark Copeland, 6-4, 6-1, for the Aztecs only victory.

Point Loma Nazarene college fell to Redlands, 5-4. Point Loma’s Hans Hoegstedt, however gained two victories. In singles play he defeated Gordon Williams, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and in doubles Hoegstedt teamed with Gary Rees to defeat Sam Lizzul and Williams, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Point Loma fell to 3-2 and Redlands improved to 1-0.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego lost just one set in its 9-0 victory over UC Irvine at Irvine. Tanya Fuller defeated Stacey Cadigan, 6-2, 7-5, in No. 1 singles.

Others singles winners for the Toreras (1-1) were Aby Brayton, Sakolwan Kacharoen, Karen Lauer, Laura Mannisto and Margo Mullally.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Diego State was swept by Hawaii in three consecutive games, 15-9, 15-4, 15-12, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. game at Peterson Gym. The Aztecs (6-3, 0-1) moved from 12th to sixth in the Coaches’ Poll this week, while Hawaii dropped from third to fourth. Carlos Briceno had 17 kills for Hawaii (7-2, 3-0). Douglas Potter and Mike Mattarocci led SDSU with 10 apiece.

San Diego lost its home opener to Cal State Northridge, and dropped to 0-7 for the season. Eric Dick led Northridge (4-4) with 16 kills. The Tritons’ Nate Brown had 20 kills.
